Welcome to the design portfolio of Carl F. Smith.
My interest in design generally focuses on the design process itself - specifically, how the application of various analysis techniques can generate insight into the design of interfaces and systems. Though the projects I have been involved in span a number of varied domains (mobile devices, automobile interfaces, websites - even a runway incursion detection system), all of the designs are based on concepts developed through task or domain analysis.
Several of the resulting designs have won awards:
- The Definitivo Automotive Design project (2005) won an Ex Aequo international award in Design, Engineering, and Innovation in the field of Automotive Human Factors.
- The design of a Wi-Fi Enabled Mobile Device (2006) won a Student Paper Award from the Communications Technical Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
- The Runway Incursion Monitoring and Detection Alert System (RIMDAS) (2007) won the FAA Airport Design Competition for Universities.
